Creating a storm in SUV market.

Tata Motors launches Safari Storme.

Tata Motors, one of the early players in the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment, had launched Tata Safari in 1997. Though the car always enjoyed a loyal fan following, the company recently decided to completely refresh Safari with a new version named Safari Storme – they call it ‘The Real SUV’. Of course, with new players entering the fray with upgraded technology, it was high time the Safari was given a new boost.

The most important change in Safari Storme is under the bonnet.  Its 2.2 L VariCOR diesel engine, turbocharged with VTT (Variable Turbine Technology), delivers 140 PS Power and  320 NM Torque, provides easy driveability, swifter response and lower NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness). The vehicle also features ESOF (electronic shift-on-fly) technology, enabling engagement of the 4x4 (4-wheel drive) or 4X2 mode, on the move.  Despite greater power, Storme is fairly fuel efficient at 14kmpl in the 4x2 variant and 13.2kmpl in the 4x4 variant. The vehicle can deliver a performance of 0 – 100 km/hr in under 15 sec.

Raw power

Apart from excellent off-roading capabilities, Safari Storme delivers more power and torque among its peers. Mahindra Scorpio, for example, delivers maximum power output of 120bhp at 4000rpm and produces a maximum torque of 290Nm between 1800 – 2800rpm with its 2.2-litre mHawk CRDe engine. The new entrant, Renault Duster with its 110PS diesel version delivers a power output of 110PS at 3900rpm and produces a maximum torque of 248Nm at 2250rpm. Even the Mahindra XUV500 with 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine delivers a power almost equal to Storme with a figure of 140bhp at 3750rpm.

The Safari Storme’s ladder frame chassis is constructed with advanced hydroformed members, for high load capabilities and robustness. It also enhances rigidity while reducing weight. The vehicle also has a double wishbone suspension set-up which provides excellent ride comfort even on bad roads.

Look has changed

In terms of look Strorme is not greatly different from its earlier versions, Tatas have done a good job in making the look fresher. It brandishes a new front look grill, side cladding, new projector headlamps and an all new rear look. The bonnet now boasts of a ‘power bulge,’ which gives it a sportier look. Aerodynamically designed spoilers, new pull-type door handles and ergonomically designed side foot-steps, ensure easy entry and exit. The spare wheel has now gone under the floor making the back look sleeker.

The Safari Storme has a wide stance with a wheelbase of 2650mm, length of 4655mm, width of 1965mm and height of 1922mm. The car has a strong road grip as tyres are of size 235/70 R16. The best for the Indian roads and also for off-roading is Storme’s exceptional ground clearance of 200mm. You can smoothly glide over the killer humps, Indian roads are known for. Storme also boasts of best-in-class turning circle radius of 5.4 metres, making driving and maneuvering in tight confines easy. The new rack & pinion steering system offers perfect feel and accuracy, for a confident driving experience, especially at high speeds. Reverse parking system with audible and graphical representation on the antiglare inside rear-view mirror, electrically operated power fold ORVM (Outside Rear-View Mirror) with turn signals, enhance the driving experience.

Rich Interior

Inside, the Storme is opulent with luxurious, airy and beige interiors. There is ample leg space and headroom to accommodate the family, and also plenty of luggage space when the rear seats are folded up. The reclining front bucket seats with fore/aft adjustment position and lumbar support ensure fatigue free long drives. The vehicle is equipped with a dual-AC with a separate integrated roof mounted blower for rear passengers.

The Storme flaunts hand stitched leather steering, for a real feel of luxury and an ergonomically shaped gear knob with chrome highlights, wooden accents on the dashboard and door trims, a new instrument cluster, chrome-lined speaker grills and inside door handles, all go a long way in enhancing the interior look.

The safety aspect

Storme is a safer vehicle on the road than before. The rigid ladder frame with hydro-formed construction provides structural strength to the vehicle. Crumple zones, side intrusion beams on all four doors, dual SRS airbags and the collapsible steering column keep passengers safe from all sides.

The vehicle has vacuum assisted independent hydraulic, ventilated disc brakes on all four- wheels and a 4 channel ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD, which helps keep the vehicle under control, during emergency braking conditions. In addition, there are features like the inertia switch and an auto engine immobilizer. In an exigency, the inertia switch automatically cuts off the fuel supply to the engine, and unlocks all the doors and also switches on the hazard warning light, to warn other road users.

Storme is very competitively priced and starts at Rs.9.95 lakhs (ex-showroom, Bangalore). The range is available in four variants, LX, EX, VX (4x2 and 4x4), in seven colours.

Entry level cars can be stylish too

Eon stands out for styling and features

Dilip Maitra (All pictures by writer)

As the bottom of the Indian car industry pyramid is getting flatter and wider, more car makers are jumping into the fray. When a car maker offers a car to the first-time buyer, the focus generally is on to keep the price as low as possible. This is why most entry-level cars keep just the bare minimum needed to offer as the focus is more on “most affordable price” rather than style or other features. But 'Eon' from Hyundai Motor India, the second largest car maker in the country after Maruti Suzuki, is an welcome change. Though placed at the entry level 'Eon’ has a sleek design and can boast of a few interesting features we normally don’t see in such cars.

But before we look at the features that set Eon apart from the rest in the same class, let us discuss the performance of the car from the driving perspective. Eon is fitted with a 814 cc petrol engine and has also added LPG engine recently.

Hyundai’s Eon's petrol engine delivers 56PS@5500rpm of maximum power and 7.65 Kgm @4000 rpm of peak torque. Although it is the same engine the company uses in its popular car Santro, the engine for Eon has been tweaked to give more power. What is means is that the 814cc petrol engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission has become more efficient in terms of power and fuel efficiency, a major obsession of the Indian buyers. The company claims that under ideal test condition Eon gives a mileage of 21.1 kmpl as per the ARAI figures, making it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the segment. In my test drive, however, I could not precisely measure the fuel efficiency of the car.

Driving Eon out of Bangalore through some hilly terrain and flat highways with four passengers, I found that for an entry-level car it delivers sufficient power on lower gears and slowly picks up speed even on higher gears thanks to a flat torque. The power and the torque also make it easy driving on a congested, bumper to bumper city drive. But those who want the kick from quick acceleration – useful for fast overtaking, shifting to lower appropriate gear is a must. Ideally one should always shift to lower gears when overtaking a fast vehicle on the highway to get the thrust of more power and quick acceleration.

The Eon engine also allows you to use the AC, without much drag, cutting out the noise from honking maniacs on our roads and the obnoxious fumes that many vehicles (including autos that use spiked fuel) belch out. Of course, the added benefit is you enjoy your favourite music in a cool and quiet cabin.

Just to make sure that an entry level car will not have to have a boring look, Hyundai’s design and development center at Namyang in Korea has worked in sync with its Hyderabad-based R&D center to firm up on the fluidic design of Eon. This design, first appeared on the Hyundai’s new sedan Verna, has a fresh, appealing look normally not seen by the entry-level segment customer. (No wonder, Hyundai's recent ad campaigns also emphasise on its stylish looks compared to its nearest rival.)

Since most customers at the entry level segment are young, buying their first car, Eon has a distinctive sporty and youthful profile with low roof line. Eon also boasts of rich interiors with comfortable leg space normally not seen in high compact segment cars. In its class, the company claims, Eon has widest and longest body, longer wheel space and largest boot space. It also has multiple bottle and cup holders, a spacious glove box and practically designed dashboard for storing small utility items.

Other interesting features, in some variants of Eon are: front power windows, internally adjustable mirrors, tilt steering, keyless entry, remote fuel & tail gate opening, central locking, front door full armrest, front room lamp, rear seatbelt knuckle holder, rear speaker grill and rear parcel tray. In the higher variant Eon is loaded with a infotainment system which comes with a 2-DIN integrated type audio with features like Radio/CD/MP3/USB/Aux-in/i-Pod connectivity.

Safety aspects
Eon also offers high-end safety features in higher variants, unseen in low compact segment cars like driver’s airbag, front fog lamps and an immobilizer that prevents the car from starting without the correct key.

It has also incorporated an interesting feature called ‘Alternator Management System’ (AMS), developed by Hyundai especially for Indian customers, to deliver more eco-efficient driving. It controls the power supply to the battery to relieve the engine workload and reduces fuel consumption & emissions while decelerating and idling. Additionally the manual shift indicator in Eon prompts the driver whenever a gear shift is required. Thus together the AMS and Gear shift indicator ensures better fuel economy and extended battery life and adds to customer’s benefit.

Duster may leave competitors in the dust

Dilip Maitra (All pictures by the writer)
While on a long drive on winding roads and uneven surface dotted with potholes, many car users often wished he was driving a SUV (sports utility vehicle) that gives a comfortable ride with the ease of handling. Well, there are already many options in India to fulfil the desire, but the problem is that all crossover SUVs are expensive and they guzzle a lot of fuel.

But now the car lovers have a much better choice – you can buy a SUV-like vehicle that gives a sedan-like comfort at almost half the price of real SUVs. The French car giant Renault has just launched Duster in India that, the company claims, has created a new category where a SUV will appeal to the buyers of sedan. “Duster combines the comfort and sophistication of a sedan and the robust ruggedness of an SUV,” claimed Renault India Vice President Sales and Marketing Len Curran in at a recent press meet in Bangalore. “I am sure customers will find Duster the best choice as it offers the comfort of a sedan with the appeal of an SUV. We expect it to be a game changer for this segment,” he said.

On a Duster in Munnar, Kerala

To understand how real was Len Curran’s claim and how far Renault has been successful in creating a car that can be a ‘segment breaker’ (as Renault claimed), I recently drove Duster for two days on the winding, narrow and hilly roads in Kerala. At the end of it our verdict is that the diesel version of Duster will be a killer product for the company which has not made much noise with its two cars in the last one year.

Though Duster is available in 3 engine variants – one 1.6 litre petrol of 104 PS of power and two 1.5 litre diesel engines of 85PS and 110 PS. The one I drove was the top end 110 PS and for most of my driving feedback on the car I shall stick to this variant.

First, for the technically knowledgeable car buyers, here are some figures to munch. Duster’s diesel options use the tested and efficient 1.5 K9K HP, dCi (common rail direct injection) diesel engine. The more powerful option delivers maximum power of 110PS@3900RPM and peak torque of 248NM@2250RPM. The engine is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission with a fuel efficiency of 19.01 Kmpl (according to ARAI figure under the ideal test conditions). The on-road price of this option in Bangalore starts at Rs 12.40 lakh and for the top end model goes up to Rs 14 lakh.

Power on tap
Now, for the general and non-tech-geek car buyers, these specifications mean the engine is powerful enough to easily overtake speeding vehicles on the highway with an extra kick from the engine. In this 110 PS engine variant Renault has added a turbocharger that provides extra power to the engine from the reserve source when the pedal is floored fully. Though the company claims the turbocharger kicks in at 1,750 rpm (rotation per minute), I found that on a flat road and with just two persons on board, the required power on the third gear comes only when the turbocharger kicks in at a higher rpm of around 2,000. In simple terms this means that there is a slight turbo-lag and one must be very precise & careful while overtaking a speeding vehicle on the highway. It is always safer to underestimate the power than overestimate while on the highway.

But, to be fair to Duster, considering its overall size, weight and the price, most buyers will find the car nicely peppy to have a fair amount of fun drive. The peppy engine was particularly enjoyable on the winding roads in a hill-drive where one needs very quick thrust of power to overtake a vehicle much before the next curve.

The second diesel option uses the same 1.5 dCi engine with maximum power of 85PS@3750RPM and a peak torque of 200NM@1900RPM. It has a certified fuel efficiency of 20.45 kmpl which will provide one of the best options for economical city driving with enough power to cruise comfortably on the highway as well, the company said. The on-road Bangalore price for this starts at Rs 9.65 lakh. Those not looking for the extra kick of the 110PS engine, this 85PS variant will be good enough for a comfortable drive on congested city roads and also on highway with higher fuel efficiency. The flat torque in this variant should also help in city driving without frequently changing the gear.

The third engine is the petrol variant (ex-showroom price begins at Rs 7.20 lakh) uses the 1.6 K4M engine with a maximum power of 104PS@5850RPM and peak torque of 145Nm@3750 RPM . This has 5-speed manual transmission and a certified fuel efficiency of 13.24 Kmpl. Though Renault officials claimed that there is a market for the petrol variant in some pockets of the country, it is unlikely to sell in significant numbers because an SUV is always preferred in more fuel efficient diesel. It becomes all the more compelling given the fact that diesel is much cheaper than petrol in India.

Quite roomy
Though being sold under different names in many other countries, Renault, with the help of its 200-strong engineering team in its Chennai plant has got Duster modified for the Indian road conditions and Indian needs.

From outside the Duster certainly has a distinctive look of a SUV but its aerodynamics design and the narrow front grill does not make the SUV-look very imposing. The exterior of the car looks good with double barrel headlights, chrome finish radiator grille, sporty 16-inch aluminum wheels, stylish roof rail and muscular wheel arches which provide the tough SUV stance to the Duster.

Yet the Duster with its compact dimension is ideal for city driving with a turning radius of 5.2 meters which is even less than some hatchbacks. Duster is positioned as a owner-driven car as the driver's environment places the accent on visibility and comfort. The ideal driving position is easy to find with its 8-way adjustable driver’s seat, with height and lumbar support, and a tilt steering wheel.

For the passengers at the rear seat the leg room is good enough to accommodate a person with nearly 6 feet height thanks to its long wheelbase of 2673 mm. The comfort is further enhanced by the separate Rear AC with independent control which was specially designed keeping in mind the extremely hot weather conditions of India. Renault officials emphasised that Rear AC is a real AC (drawing cool air directly from the compressor) and not just a blower. The car also has huge boot space of 475 litre (good enough to carry enough luggage for a vacation), this can be enhanced big time when rear seats are folded down.

Road handling
A test-drive report will remain incomplete unless we talk about the easy and effective read-handling of Duster. On the sharply winding roads of Munnar I did several quick-cornering at a fairly good speed (by the hill driving standard) of between 40 and 60 kmph to test the stability of the car. The result was very satisfactory as I found the car very stable. Thanks to the R16 tubeless tyres, suspension system, monocoque chassis, wide body and long wheelbase, the Duster felt wedded to the road even on sharp bends. On several rough and pothole ridden patches too the Duster was absorbing most of the shocks from the road, but the steering wheel, which otherwise has the right amount of rigidness for fast driving, was giving a lot of feedback from the bad roads, specially when the car had hit a pothole on a bend.

Safety features
The Duster is loaded with active and passive safety features like dual airbags for the driver and co-passenger, ABS, EBD with brake assist and a monocoque body with side impact beams. The Duster also comes with a service package offering customers a 2+2 years/80,000Km warranty, labour free service at 2,000, 10,000 and 20,000Km with 24/7 Roadside Assistance through a dedicated call centers. Duster is manufactured at Renault’s plant in Oragadam, Chennai with 60 per cent indigenous content.
